Overcoming IT Challenges in Kenya
Grid failure is an operating condition, not an edge case. The national grid went down on the night of 29 July 2026, taking Nairobi, the Coast and Mt Kenya with it until roughly 2am; Kenya Power attributed it to a "technical disturbance" and did not name the component that failed. Sites that kept working did so on their own UPS and generator capacity — which is a sizing, runtime and testing question rather than a purchase.
KRA eTIMS turned invoicing availability into tax exposure. Since 1 January 2026 KRA validates declared income and expenses against eTIMS records, and expenses without a valid electronic invoice can be disallowed. That puts e-invoicing in the same bracket as any other production system: it needs integration that holds, and a recovery plan that covers it.
Data-protection enforcement has moved past guidance. The ODPC now issues enforcement notices, penalty notices and compensation orders under the Data Protection Act 2019, with administrative fines reaching KES 5 million. Access control, privilege review and retention records become evidence you may have to produce, not housekeeping you intend to get to.
